Correctly using "for", and "ago".

These exercises will help you to correctly use the words ‘ago’ (vor) and ‘for’ when talking about past actions.

Remember,

• The German word vor translates to ago, and is most usually used with the Past Simple tense, and comes immediately after the time in the sentence, i.e. twenty minutes ago, a year ago, ages ago. Ich habe vor drei Jahren hier angefangen. = I started here three years ago.

• For and is used to express the duration of an action or state, and is placed before the duration of time in the sentence, i.e. for two weeks, for a year. Ich habe dort zwei Jahre lang gearbeitet = I worked there for two years.

Excercise: translate the following sentences using either ago or for.

1. Ich habe die Universität vor zehn Jahren abgeschlossen.

2. Ich habe drei Jahre lang studiert.

3. Er hat die Firma schon vor langer Zeit verlassen.

4. Er hat ein halbes Jahr lang für das Unternehmen gearbeitet.

5. Ich habe vor etwa 6 Monaten in dieser Abteilung angefangen zu arbeiten.

6. Bevor ich anfing, war ich 6 Monate lang im Urlaub.

7. Keine Sorge, die Sitzung hat erst vor ein paar Sekunden begonnen.

8. Die letzte Sitzung hat etwa zwei Stunden gedauert.

9. Dieses Produkt wurde vor etwa einem halben Jahr eingestellt.

10. Wir haben das Produkt zehn Jahre lang verkauft.

11. Es tut mir leid, aber er hat das Büro vor etwa 5 Minuten verlassen.

12. Ich habe etwa zwei Wochen an dem Dokument gearbeitet und es Ihnen vor etwa zwei Wochen zugeschickt.

13. Sie war etwa zehn Jahre lang Geschäftsführerin und ging vor fast einem Jahr in den Ruhestand.
